Ocean's FAQ (Updated)

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 3, 2011, 9:34 AM

Hello guys, welcome to the FAQ.
If you have any questions that aren't on here you may ask me, but please read them throughly before doing so. Thanks!

LAST UPDATED:  Mar 17 2012

G E N E R A L

Q. What's your real name?
A. Trying not to give it out so much anymore, sorry heh~;; Just call me Ocean!

Q. How do you pronounce Oshaikeuchi?
A. Oh-shy-ee-keh-oo-chee

Q. How old are you?
A. Secret! Though my birthday is April 24th.

Q. Where do you live?
A. Ontario, Canada :3

Q. How long have you been drawing?
A. About 7 years. I can't really put a specific number on it because I stopped drawing on-and-off a couple of years back.

Q. Do you sell at any cons?
A. Mainly Anime North (Toronto), and Otakuthon. I am going to Anime Expo 2012 and Toracon 2012 as well. You can buy my work online at meloncake.net.

Q. Can I purchase your manga at Barnes&Noble/Chapters/Indigo/etc?
Sorry no, but you can only purchase it through me. It is not officially published so I only sell them independently at the moment. :) They're available at meloncake.net.

Q. Please draw so-and-so for me?
A. I don't have time for requests, but I do take commissions (meaning for money payment). You can check rates here: oceanchan.deviantart.com/journ…
Note me if you're interested. :3

Q. Can you make a tutorial on ___?
A. Honestly I don't really believe in tutorials... well, to a certain extent. I believe teaching techniques but I don't believe in "how-to-draw"s. Nor do I really think I am the person to go to for such tutorials since my art really isn't perfect.... (specially anatomy). If you're having trouble with anatomy, look at pictures. If you're having trouble with hands, look at your hands. Reference is always your best teacher, I can not "tell" you how to draw something.

Q. Can we be friends? Can I have your MSN/skype?
A. Please don't ask this kind of thing upfront. :( (Friendship doesn't really work that way.) If you want to get to know me you can come to my livestream, I enjoy talking to people there. :3

Q. Can you check out my drawings and give me some tips?
A. As much as I'd like to (and I really did try doing it for awhile) I just cannot keep up with everyone. I'm sorry. :( Just practice. That's really honestly all it takes, you can't learn it over night. (And I suck at giving tips lol)

Q. When you start sketching something, do you have a general idea of how you want it to look (pose, theme, clothing, etc) or do you just start drawing and think it up as you go?
A. Usually I have a general idea, but once in a blue moon a shitty mindless sketch will turn into something with potential. xD;

Q. Do you have any other hobbies or interested?
I am very interested in lolita/spank/fairy-kei fashion and lolicon. I also love singing and voice acting.

Q. Are you really a lolicon?
A. Yes.

Q. Where do you get all your clothes?
A. oceanchan.deviantart.com/journ…

Q. What kind of markers do you use?
A. Copic markers: www.copicmarker.com/

Q. What set do you have?
A. 72B, 72D, and many extras.

Q: What kind of paper do you use?
A. I use Bee Brand marker paper, which is meant for alcoholic-based markers such as Copics: www.beepaper.com/html/926.asp
I also use Imagination Internal sketchbooks, and Haein art centre paper.
Regular printer paper is also okay to use but it isn't the best.

Q. How long have you been using copics?
A. Since October 2008.

Q. What pens do you use for lining? What sizes?
A. Copic multiliners. Any other pens I've tried with copics make the lines bleed. The sizes I most often use are 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 for eyes. :3

Q. What colours do you use for skin tones?
A. Usually the same. I use E00, R000, R00, R01, R02, and BV31. (But it also depends on whether I'm colouring a male or a female or how tanned they are, etc.)

Q. How do you blend the colours? Do you use the Copic blender?
A. I do not use the copic blender, unless it's one colour + the white of the paper. I never use use the copic blender for two colours because I find it separates it really uglyishly (?? lol). The way I blend to colours is, I must have two that will blend easily (for example, yellow/orange). Fill the area with the lighter colour (yellow), then shade with the darker colour (orange), then go back and blend with that same yellow. To blend just lay down the colour several times quickly in the same spot. You can see a visual example of this in my "Ocean's first copic marker tutorial" video, link located in my gallery~  >u<

Q. Where can I get copic markers?
If you are living in a small town they are difficult to find, but in big cities they should be at your local art store (the chain store Curry's has a lot of them, and I think most Michael's just got them in stock). If there's not place locally that has them I suggest purchasing online. Akadot Retail has lots of copics and well as handy mangaka supplies, and there are some good deals on eBay as well. Lately I've been buying mine from Amazon and ebay.

Q. What do you use for the white parts? (Eye shines etc)
A. I use a white gelpen for small spots, and bottled white ink (Brand: Deleter white ink available at akadot.com) for larger areas.

Q. Do you sketch/ink/colour all on one paper or do you trace the sketch when inking?
A. All on one paper. :3 I don't have a lightboard... or w/e they're called lol~

Q. What programs do you use for your digital colouring?
A. Paint Tool SAI, and Photoshop CS5. (I used to use OpenCanvas4.5e Plus, but not so much anymore.)

Q. Do you have to buy these programs? Where do you get them from?
A. I bought my Opencanvas a few years back, however they don't sell them in English anymore (only in Japanese) but I'm sure there are free English downloads swimming around the net - everything is pretty much available for download if you look hard enough. I suggest torrenting. I've never found a virused link yet.
As for Paint Tool SAI, there is a free month trial at it's English site: www.systemax.jp/en/sai/ , where you can also buy it. Again, you can also torrent it online.
Goes the same for Photoshop and all of it's versions.

Q. What tablet do you use? How much was it?
A. I use Wacom intuos4 medium, and it was $250. I bought it used.

Q. How do you do lineart/colouring/blending in SAI?
A. I use the brush tool to lineart in SAI. For colouring, I use the pen tool for filling, and the water colour/marker brush for blending.

Q. How do you colour your lines in SAI?
A. Set your lineart layer (must have ONLY lines on it, no flattened image with a white background) to preserve opacity. Then colour away.

Q. How big are your canvases?
A. This is a really vague question. It depends what size I want my canvas to be, obviously - but my print sizes are 8.5x11 and 11x17 inches. I usually do them at 300dpi, so pixel width it could be anywhere from 5000x3000 pixels, somewhere around that area. I made my canvases really big so I can include more details.

Q. What are your brush/blending settings?
A. I can't answer this because I don't have one set of blend settings. They are always changing. And I don't mean like "I use this setting for the eyes, and this setting for the face" I mean they change every tenth stroke or so. It depends exactly what I'm doing. Sorry! ;;

Q. What do you use to record your screen?
A. Hypercam2.

Q. What do you use to edit your videos?
A. Previously Windows Movie Maker, now Sony Vegas Pro 9.

Q. How do you record your copic videos?
A. Most of them are just my laptop screen tilted down (the webcam is internally inside the laptop) and looks down upon the drawing. Then I flip the recording in a editor.

Q. How do you speed up your videos?
A. Previously used the "double speed" feature on WMM, now I do it in Sony vegas Pro (I think you press shift or caps or tab or ctrl....and drag it to the left lol. I forget which one it is xD;; )

Q. Where did you get your manga published?
A. None of the books I make are officially "published", they're printed at my local print place who also put them together for me.

Q. Where do you print your prints/stickers/keychains?
Prints are done where ever I can get them done at the time, usually Staple (on 100lb paper). Mangas are printed on Lulu.com. Stickers are done at home (with sticker paper, easily available at Staples) and keychains are printed, laminated and holepunched where I put the keychain through (bought at Michael's). Buttons are made with a button maker I bought off eBay.

Q. How do you come up with stories/create characters?
A. That's really a vague question...;;; Um, for stories, I do whatever would get a reaction out of my audience. I love surprise endings and story twists.
As for characters (visually) I usually make them based on colour. (Like Arrow, P.T., and Rise are a great combo of red, yellow, and grreen for hair :3c) and not too any characters with the same hair colour. As for their personalities, I try to base them on people I know so they can seem believable.

Q. What is your manga-making process like?
A. When I have a story, I making thumbnails for the pages (by chapter) and write the script when I'm making the roughs for the panels. Then I sketch the the pages according to each thumbnail, then ink, and tone.

If anyone else has any questions I should add, please, ask away! >v<
